PLUS we have a powerful lineup of talented\, intelligent\, and inspiring speakers you will not want to miss! \nNew Members\, New Technology\, and high-level\, effective collaborations  \nDr. Janel Ohletz– Shares the path from her previous work as a sustainable farming and food advocate to her new role as agriculture supply chain manager with Plantd\, a start-up company based in Durham\, NC\, focused on sequestering carbon through sustainable building material production. \nDr. Laura Kavanaugh and Martin Crompton– Share how Union Grove Farm Vineyard\, Chapel Hill\, NC in collaboration with Genome Insights LLC\, is applying regenerative farming methods to grow a novel seedless muscadine table grape; a groundbreaking approach in the grape industry.  Equally groundbreaking\, they are exploring the use of emerging DNA sequencing technologies to evaluate the quality of compost and liquid biological amendment to ensure their compost optimizes the soil when planting\, and liquid vermicompost extracts will provide vines with healthy biology\, nutrients and resistance to pathogens and insects.  Laura and Martin will share details of their on-farm composting operations and their new liquid biological amendment laboratory. \nSarah Justice and Leigh Williams –Share how the Town of Cary launched a food waste recycling drop-off and partnered with the non-profit Toward Zero Waste (TZW)to help develop outreach and education. Get the dirt on this pilot service\, partnership and impact\, and the importance of TZW\, in developing concept\, marketing and education materials and continuous support for community participation. Learn about Cary’s longstanding commitment to composting that includes a Compost Education Center\, annual workshops\, and a comprehensive regenerative agriculture program. \nMarie Davis and Riley Alber– Describe how the synergy between the Coastal Composting Council (a regional committee of the NCCC) in finding an advocate in New Hanover County government\,  influenced the creation of the first County composting site\, which then led to the Wilmington Composting Company  siting and permitting of a private regional 75-acre facility.  Hear how grassroots efforts aligned with partnerships with County and City officials\, UNCW\, the NCCC\, local businesses and other influencers to become a viable (and enviable) organics diversion community. \nChristine Wittmeier – Shares in her new role as Organics Recycling Specialist for NCDEQ in the Division of Environmental Assistance and Customer Service (NCDEACS). Before her recent move\, she was Environmental Programs Supervisor at Henderson County Solid Waste. Henderson County’s compost journey started with a modest two-cart food scrap drop-off that evolved into a Type 3 ASP facility and six lunchroom composting programs.  She will share the successes and challenges starting these programs\, as well as the MOST recent updates and opportunities from NCDEACS. \nWe hope to see you there! \nNorth Carolina Composting Council \nHelp get the word out!
