SUMMARY:ICAW Webinar: Landfills\, Food Waste & Community Impact
DESCRIPTION:The North Carolina Composting Council (NCCC) and The ReCollective present an International Compost Awareness Week (ICAW) webinar\, “Landfills\, Food Waste\, and Community Impact\,” on May 5\, 2026 at 2pm (ET). This session will feature insights from Muriel Williman of NCCC and Bryce Brooks of The ReCollective\, both leaders working on the front lines of waste management in the triangle region of North Carolina. \nAs landfill pressures grow and municipal systems struggle to keep up with food waste and hard-to-recycle materials\, innovative local solutions are stepping in to fill the gaps. This webinar will explore how composting—paired with specialty recycling—can serve as a powerful\, community-driven alternative. Attendees will learn how entrepreneurial models are emerging where traditional services fall short\, creating opportunities for both environmental impact and local economic growth. \nFeatured speaker Muriel Williman\, Senior Assistant Solid Waste Manager for the City of Durham Solid Waste Management\, brings more than 20 years of experience in municipal recycling and composting. Muriel will share practical insights from decades of work within local government systems\, offering a candid look at the challenges municipalities face\, the progress being made\, and where opportunities exist for collaboration with private and community-driven solutions. \nThe ReCollective will provide an overview of their three core programs:\nCommunity Composting – decentralized\, neighborhood-based compost solutions\nOneStop Service – a convenient model combining composting with specialty recycling for hard-to-recycle items\nFarmers’ Market Drop-Off – increasing accessibility through community hubs \nIn addition\, the session will highlight ReCollective’s partnerships\, including their collaboration with Brooks Contractor\, which helps expand their mission and reach. \nWhether you’re a local leader\, entrepreneur\, or sustainability advocate\, this webinar will offer practical insights and inspiration for building more resilient\, community-centered waste solutions. \n
