NC Pumpkin-Collection Drop Spots
Pumpkins, gourds, corn and even bales of straw are wonderful fall decorations, but they are a big problem if you throw them in the trash. Besides taking up a lot of space, organic matter like this creates methane when it decomposes in the landfill. The good news is that it makes great food for livestock and fabulous rich compost.
The NCCC reached out to entities across the state to compile a list of Pumpkin Collection Events and places that you can dispose of old fall organic-decorations, along with some instructions on how municipalities would like you to dispose of your compostable waste. Please remove candles, glue, and any other non-compostable dcorative materials before disposing. Pumpkins that have been painted are NOT compostable (unless bio-based paints were used).
Please contact NCCC if you know of additional pumpkin collection drop off sites in your area. Bring your carved pumpins and other fall decor made of vegetable matter to a food waste drop-off site in the following areas:
Buncombe County:
November 8th from 10am-2pm at Stephens-Lee Community Center (30 George Washington Avenue, Asheville, NC 28801)
December 6th from 10am-2pm at Skyland/South Buncombe Library (260 Overlook Road, Asheville, NC 28803).
Cartaret County:
Crystal Coast Compost

Chatham County:
Carolina Tiger Rescue
Carolina Tiger Rescue in Pittsboro. Pumpkins make great tiger toys! Carolina Tiger Rescue will be collecting pumpkins at the sanctuary through November. They can also use your old body sprays, perfumes, colognes, and Christmas trees.
Durham County:

Drop off by appointment in November and December at the Jireh Family Farm in Durham. Jireh Family Farm is a working farm with cattle, pigs, and chickens. Hit the Road Jack! @ Sierra Nevada Brewing Co.
Stop by the Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. in Mills River, NC, for Hit the Road Jack (November 7-9, 2025 from 11am-9pm) for a fun and sustainable send-off for your pumpkins! We’re turning jack-o’-lanterns into compost. Bring your used pumpkins and toss them into our compost hopper. Snap a photo of yourself doing it, then show it to the Sierra Nevada team in the Gift Shop to receive 10% off eligible items.
Johnson County:
Heelside Farm
By appointment drop-off in November through December at Heelside Farm, in Four Oaks. Heelside Farm is a working farm with cattle, sheep and poultry. Pumpkins and other vegetable donations will be fed to the livestock or composted for soil amendment. Contact through their Facebook Page.

New Hanover County-NC Cooperative Extension & Arboretum Center
Drop Pumpkins or other compostable organic fall decorations at the New Hanover County Arboretum between November 1st-10th, and December 1st-8th.

New Hanover County Landfill
NHC Landfill offer free pumpkin and organic waste drop off Monday-Friday 6:30am to 5:00pm; Saturday 6:30am-12pm; Closed Sundays. (5210 US Highway 421 N., Wilmington, NC)
Inform staff at the weigh house that you’re using the compost/pumpkin drop off for food waste to waive the fee.
New Hanover County HazWagon, 10am-2pm on Designated Days
NHC Landfill offers a free recycling option to drop off pumpkin and organic waste at the HazWagon for free on Mondays at Ogden Park in Wilmington, near the baseball fields; Wednesdays at Wrightsville Beach Town Hall; Fridays at Carolina Beach Chappell Park; and the 1st Saturday each month at Kure Beach Town Hall.
